Far Out Magazine on Instagram: "Neil Young has announced he’ll be eliminating platinum tickets from his future tours after beiing inspired by The Cure’s Robert Smith’s consistent battle against Ticketmaster.
Writing on his Neil Young Archives website, Young shared an article about Smith fighting against eyewatering ticket prices and dynamic pricing, which costs fans even more. In that piece, Smith says that the current ticket market is “just driven by greed.”
“It’s a story of the bad thing that has happened to concerts worldwide. It’s a story that really helped me realize I have a choice to make and can make a difference for my music loving friends,” Young wrote before announcing, “Very soon, platinum tickets will no longer be available for my shows.”
Vowing to bring an end to special, more expensive platinum tickets, he claimed that these were originally to protect his shows from scalpers.
“My management and agent have always tried to cover my back on the road, getting me the best deals they could. They have tried to protect me and the fans from scalpers who buy the best tickets and resell them at huge increases for their own profits,” he wrote on his site.
“Ticketmaster’s high priced Platinum tickets were introduced to the areas where scalpers were buying the most tickets for resale. The money went to me,” he said before adding, “That did not feel right.”
With a promise to change, Young becomes another artist actively fighting against the rising expense of live music. It’s unsure yet how this will be implemented, especially given that his show in Hyde Park in the summer for BST features a more expensive golden circle opinion. However, going forward, it seems his tours will be more accessible for all.
